Schools should:
- Enable students to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence
- enable students to distinguish right from wrong and to respect the civil and criminal law of England
- encourage students to accept responsibility for their behaviour, show initiative, and to understand how they can contribute positively to the lives of those living and working in the locality of the school and to society more widely
- enable students to acquire a broad general knowledge of and respect for public institutions and services in England
- further tolerance and harmony between different cultural traditions by enabling students to acquire an appreciation for and respect for their own and other cultures
- encourage respect for other people, and
- encourage respect for democracy and support for participation in the democratic processes, including respect for the basis on which the law is made and applied in England.
‘The school’s Christian character is expressed in its inclusivity and secure, nurturing relationships. As a result, children show great care for one another. They respect and value difference. ‘ (SIAMs 2016.)
Rule of Law– Children have experienced visiting the magistrates court in Workington. The children work on a real life scenario that is appropriate for their age and development. The magistrates court allow us access to the courtroom for the role play and the children even get to look inside the cells!
Democracy– Children across school are invited to join the school council. Children take this opportunity to write their own manifestos and then these are presented and children are voted on to the council. The council meets regularly and inputs into the school improvement plan. Children get to speak to year group representatives who will feed in comments and suggestions to the meetings.
Mutual Respect and Tolerance– Our vision includes sections about community and living well together as well as dignity and respect. These elements include themes such as friendship, respect of others’ views and beliefs, forgiveness, self-esteem and consideration for others. These elements are evident across school and are embedded throughout the curriculum.
Individual Liberty- The children study the book ‘We are all born free’. In this unit of work children look at the universal declaration of human rights in an accessible form.
